Horse and Hounds Chesapeakes is a small kennel near the dunes of Oostvoorne in South Holland. Our dogs are part of our family and all are hunted in the field as well as performing in the show ring and European field trials.
My first remembrance of the Chesapeake was at the age of 10. I was watching “Flipper” on television and in one of the broadcasts there sat a big, brown dog in the front of a pickup truck between the ranger and his son. I asked about the dog but I could find no one who knew anything about it. When I became older, I again saw the breed quite by accident -- from that point forward I was “hooked”. Later I was to discover that the big, brown dog I saw on television was owned by Dr. John Lundy from the United States!
After my initial experience with training my first Chesapeakes, I became more serious about locating a dog that might be capable of running field trials or tests, hunt, and still have it as my best friend. With some difficulty, I was finally able to locate a Chesapeake, “NET CH Humlemosen’s Mist W’95” with the help of Jetty v.d. Brugge. Mist’s breeder was Mrs Jensen in Haslev, Denmark. Mist was my first love and my breed foundation bitch, producing “NET CH Horse and Hounds Buzzard, W’97 WDQ” (Harry) as well as “Horse and Hounds Scaup” who later became best working dog in 2000. Together Mist and I had a very successful career with first places in cold game and working tests. A Chesapeake competing in these tests was very rare at the time.
Today, we continue to move forward with our breeding program that has included introduction of imports into our lines. We believe that we have been successful in producing a physically sound Chesapeake with a good temperament who is as comfortable hunting or working field trials as he might be in show competition or being a member of a family.
Along with our Chesapeake Bay Retrievers, we own and breed, on a limited basis, Icelandic horses -- hence our name “Horse and Hounds”. We have dedicated a full page on our web site so you might learn more about these unique and wonderful horses
Enjoy your visit to our web site and meeting our wonderful dogs -- both past and present and our Icelandic horses.
